The Executives hail from the Magnet Theatre in New York City. Formed as a house team at the venerable NYC comedy institution, their collective writing credits include: The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Broad City, Master of None, Funny Or Die, and more.
The Executives’ physical, thoughtful, follow-the-fun comedic energy celebrates genre bending, the zeitgeist, body-slamming and sometimes bodily functions. The Executive’s omni-brain answered our questions.
You guys hail from the Magnet Theater in NYC. There’s a ton of comedy in NYC. What makes the Magnet different/stand out from the other venues and training centers?
The Executives: There are so many great places to do comedy in NYC. We all really enjoy the sense of community that the Magnet fosters. It’s probably why we’re all in love with each other in a really sappy and embarrassing way.
Did the artistic department of the Magnet cast this group, or did you come together of your own accord?
The Executives: We are a house team at the theater that they cast, but the Magnet may be a matchmaking service because we did all fall in love with each other.
What’s your writing process like? How do you generate new material?
The Executives: We started out as an underground government think tank, so generating ideas was easy then. Now, we just stare at each other for 3 hours a week until we say something funny enough to write about. Most of our best jokes come from pitching and improvising on half-baked sketches in the room.
What do you have planned for your ASF show? What are you looking forward to in Austin?
The Executives: We as a whole love to sing and dance…. so we’re DEFINITELY doing some of that. In Austin we’re doing the three T’s: TACOS. TUBING. TITS – we mean THEATER!
What sketch comedy has blown your mind?
The Executives: Some of us were at Montreal Sketchfest a few years ago and Elephant Empire from Toronto straight up BLEW OUR MINDS.
Do you have any worst/best audience stories?
The Executives: We don’t know about WORST audience, but playing to a crowd of 60 Canadian teenage tourists on a Monday night makes for a really weird show. PRO Tips: they LOVE Justin Beiber jokes and don’t know what Tinder is.
One time one of our videos wasn’t working so the director had to run backstage mid-show and tell one of the actors to go on stage and tell one of the other actors to ad-lib and it was a mid-show miracle that somehow got laughs and nobody knew anything had gone wrong!
What should people interested in comedy know that you didn’t know when you started?
The Executives: Listen to everyone! Nobody knows anything starting out! Also, don’t be a dick. Nobody wants to work with a dick. Oh, and being affiliated with a theater is cool, but make the rounds, man. It only makes you better.
We need to increase the visibility of this article. Any suggestions for a click-bait headline?
The Executives: These people tried meth for the first time. You’ll never believe what happened next!
