The show description for the North American Field Guide states, "North American Field Guide will give you zero answers and leave you more empty than when you started searching. There is no hope now," so we figured we'd try to get some actual answers out of them. We had some luck!
When did you first start working together?
North American Field Guide was formed in the fall of 2016 as the world’s light began to dim.
How did you come up with your team name / show title?
A North American Field Guide to Identifying Cat Turds was the working title before we became too disgusted with ourselves.
What was the first sketch idea you can remember having as a group or an individual?
Poop Talk, an AM radio call in show featuring two amiable DJ’s with a lot of opinions on how to correctly defecate.
What's your creative process like? How do you generate ideas and keep it fresh?
The answer to both inquiries is smoking marijuana.
Who are your influences? Who are some of your favorite sketch comedy acts performing today? Who has blown your mind?
Kids in the Hall, Birthday Boys, My Mans, Mr. Show. My Man’s show at Austin Sketch Fest a few years ago impressed both of us and gave us a lot of inspiration to be weirder.
Do you have any fun "worst show" or "worst audience member" stories?
North American Field Guide audiences are comprised of wonderful people with lovely homes.
Do you have any fun "best show" stories?
Nostalgia is for suckers.
Are there any ideas that you've had that you can't seem to make work or convince the rest of the team / troupe is actually funny.
I can’t spoil it here. one day it really will work, i swear. You’ll see. You’ll ALL see
What should people interested in comedy know about performing sketch that you didn't know when you started?
Even the dumbest idea is acceptable. Don’t be afraid to be ridiculous if it makes you laugh. Don’t apologize for your sense of humor. Try Pot.
What else – comedy wise – are you looking forward to this year? What do you have cooking?
Performing at Austin Sketch Fest. Traveling to other festivals. Developing a musical in secret.
